In another case, police arrested 21 people — most of them Africans — for running “parcel scams.”

The police also seized 13 laptops, 16 mobile phones, several bundles of counterfeit US$100 bills, and RM42,979 in cash.

The scam involves a syndicate member approaching a prospective victim to say there is a parcel from overseas to be delivered to him or her.

The victim would then receive a call from another syndicate member, impersonating as a customs officer, who would ask for some cash to be sent to a bank before the item can be cleared by the Customs.

The syndicates’ victims were largely single women in their 40’s, who they befriended via the Internet.

ACP Rohaimi said that this was not a new scam as there were 591 cases — with reported losses of RM16mil — last year.

“This year, there have so far been 253 cases with RM4.7mil in losses,” he said.

ACP Rohaimi said a Malaysian woman was among those arrested. They are all in their 20s and 30s.

They were picked following a series of raids in the Klang Valley over the past two weeks.

“This syndicate is responsible for 83 parcel scams, with losses of up to RM500,000.”

ACP Rohaimi said some members of these syndicates were also involved in “black money” scams.

Four arrested over scam of fake notes

KUALA LUMPUR: Four African students involved in a fake money scam were arrested after they were caught in possession of fake US dollars and ringgit notes valued over RM1.8mil.

Their scam came to light following a police report lodged by a 53-year-old housewife from Rawang who was cheated of RM18,000 after she did not obtain the US$3.2mil (RM9.9mil) promised to her by the syndicate.

City commercial crimes division chief Asst Comm Izany Abdul Ghany said that in her report on June 10, the woman alleged that she was cheated by two Nigerians and two Cameroonians who were university and college students here.

She said the syndicate claimed they obtained US$3.2mil through a “Roll Over Program” in the United States but the money had been compounded by the Customs Department when it arrived here.

They claimed, as students, they were not able to access the money and she could claim the cash with a “certificate of ownership” that would be sold to her by them.

The housewife paid the four individuals RM18,000 at the Gleneagles Hospital car park area and at Avenue K mall on June 5 and 7 respectively.

She lodged a report after she was not able to contact them for three days and did not receive the certificate.

Asst Comm Izany said a police team from city commercial crimes division nabbed a syndicate member in his 20s at Avenue K on June 10 during a special operation.

“Our follow-up investigations led the team to raid a luxury apartment unit in Kampung Baru, Ampang on June 10 where three more members aged between 24 and 30 were caught.

“At the unit, we seized 8,400 fake ringgit notes of RM50 denomination and 4,430 fake US dollars notes of various denominations,” he said.

Further investigations revealed the four have been operating for two years and police believe more Africans could be involved with the syndicate.

He said police did not recover any equipments used to produce the fake currencies were but believe the fake notes are made locally.

Izany said the four have been remanded until June 24.

GEORGE TOWN: Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is on the lookout for any suspicious activities among its students after a Nigerian enrolled in the university was arrested for allegedly being involved in an Internet love scam.

Deputy registrar Mohamad Abdullah said the university was closely monitoring the situation and would take the sternest action against any student found breaking the law.

“USM is continuously monitoring all reports and is in the process of getting more detailed information.

“The university is also working together with the police and authorities to ensure that no students are involved (in illegal activities),” Mohamad told The Star yesterday.

It was reported yesterday that a 14-member syndicate that had cheated 111 women of between RM5,000 and RM155,000 each, had been busted by police.

Three local women and 11 Nigerians were arrested, one of whom is enrolled for a short course in USM.

In a related development, Penang Commercial Crime Department chief Asst Comm Roslee Chik said three more bank account numbers had been found in connection with the scam.

He urged any woman who had been instructed to deposit funds into Maybank account 1570-5472-2986 or CIMB bank accounts 0733-0049081-52-2 and 0713-0080029-52-3 to contact police immediately.

Members of the syndicate that had been operating in Penang for two years, had wooed single women through online chats by pretending to be handsome British men.

After winning over the victims’ trust, the “British men” conveyed their intention to send gifts to the women.

The women then received calls from a local woman impersonating a Customs officer, telling them the gift had been held up and that a penalty had to be paid into a bank account.

SHAH ALAM: Four Nigerians who abducted the son of a Nigerian politician studying at a private university in Cyberjaya, were arrested together with their Malaysian and Indonesian girlfriends in Cheras.

Selangor acting CID chief Asst Comm Omar Mamah said the 28-year-old student was abducted while walking along the main road outside his campus on May 23 and had been kept tied up in a rented terrace house in Bandar Damai Perdana, Cheras for a month.

All four Nigerians and two women in their 20s to 30s were arrested14 hours after the victim was released at about 1.30am on June 20, in Cyberjaya. All have been remanded until June 27.

“We were alerted of the abduction after the victim’s brother informed the police on May 24, the day after the incident, upon receiving a call from their parents in Nigeria,’’ he said, adding that the abductors had asked for a RM30,000 ransom.

ACP Omar Mamah said the victim had been hit on the head, back and legs and received outpatient treatment at a hospital in Cyberjaya for his injuries.

“Police also seized three laptops, a camera, 15 hand phones, 11 forged passports and two cars, a Proton Saga and Kia Spectra.

“We believe this group is involved in a syndicate that makes forged passports as Zimbabwe, Zambia, Pakistan, Thailand and Philippines passports were found,” he said.

ACP Omar Mamah added that the group was also linked to another abduction on Feb 18, where a Nigerian student from the same varsity and her friend were abducted.

Both female students were released on Feb 24, after their families in Nigeria paid a ransom of US$15,000 (RM52,500).

ACP Omar Mamah said that all the four Nigerians do not have valid travel documents.

73-year-old woman loses RM155,000 to ‘lover’ By ANDREA FILMER andrea@thestar.com.my GEORGE TOWN: A 73-year-old woman was swindled of RM155,000 in an Internet love scam by a Nigerian syndicate that has been busted by police.

She was the latest victim of the syndicate, which had cheated 110 other women over the last two years of about RM1.35mil.

The other victims included teachers, a lawyer and an engineer who were cheated of money from as little as RM5,000.

Penang deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm (I) Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said the Nigerians had posed as handsome British men, courting their victims, who were all single Penang women, through online chats.

“They took the time to win over the women’s hearts and trust, sometimes to the extent of proposing marriage,” SAC Tun Hishan told a press conference here yesterday.

After about two months of courting, the “British men” conveyed their intention to send the women gifts in the form of laptop computers, mobile phones and cash in American currency.

“The women then received calls from a local woman impersonating a Customs officer, telling them that the parcel had been held up for Customs checks.

“They told the victims that a penalty had to be paid and provided them with bank accounts to pay the fine,” SAC Tun Hisan said.

He said the “British men” and parcels disappeared after the victims banked in the money.

He said the majority of the victims were aged between 20 and 50. Half of them are believed to be college and university students.

The syndicate was busted last Friday when police arrested 11 Nigerian men and three local women in raids on two houses in Seberang Prai and Butterworth after a month of surveillance.

Two computer hard disks, two flash drives, six laptop computers, 36 mobile phones, RM849, US$1,546 (RM5,086), 1,000 (RM4.080) and 1,930 Nigerian nairas (RM41.45) were seized in the raids.

The suspects are aged between 25 and 38, and some of the Nigerians are enrolled as students in institutions of higher education in Penang.

“From documents we recovered, we feel there are more victims out there,” SAC Tun Hisan said.

He urged anyone who had been asked to deposit money into CIMB bank accounts 0733-0022708-4, 0733-0022691-52-3 or 0733-0024037-52-5 to come forward and assist police in investigations.

I live in Plaza Damas, Sri hartamas area with my fiance. We were walking out of a bar in this place where we play pool, heading to our apartment. We noticed a black guy with beard jumped out of no where and started to follow us, I had the pepper spray ready to go but I guess he got the idea we are prepared and he stopped.

I guess something seriously dangerous going on in this place which is supposed to be safe and protected by local guards. I couldn't report as he didn't do anything to us eventually. But for sure he was there looking for victims (i guess girls).

I will keep you posted on this if I see any other evidences and for sure will be reporting to the police station nearby.

I had many african friends from other countries who warned me about Nigerians and Somalian by saying they are extremely dangerous and cruel creatures even among africans.

A Malaysian Diaspora speaks up.... I am a female Chinese Malaysian, living in the Washington DC area in the United States .. I have read many of the letters that often talk about foreign countries when the writers have no real knowledge of actually living in those countries. Many draw conclusions about what those countries are like after hearing it from someone else or by reading and hearing about them in the media or after four years in a college town in those countries. I finished STPM with outstanding results from the prestigious St George's Girls School in Penang . Did I get a university place from the Malaysian government? Nothing. With near perfect scores, I had nothing, while my Malay friends were getting offers to go overseas. Even those with 2As got into university. I was so depressed. I was my parents last hope for getting the family out of poverty and at 18, I thought I had failed my parents. Today, I understand it was the Malaysian Government that had failed me and my family because of its discriminatory policies. Fortunately, I did not give up and immediately did research at the Malaysian American Commission on Education Exchange (MACEE) to find a university in the US that would accept me and provide all the finances. My family and friends thought I was crazy, being the youngest of nine children of a very poor carpenter. Anything that required a fee was out of our reach. Based on merit and my extracurricular activities of community service in secondary school, I received full tuition scholarship, work study, and grants to cover the four years at a highly competitive US university. Often, I took 21 credits each semester, 15 credits each term while working 20 hours each week and maintaining a 3.5 CGPA. A couple of semesters, I also received division scholarships and worked as a TA (teaching assistant) on top of everything else. For the work study, I worked as a custodian (yes, cleaning toilets), carpet layer, computer lab assistant, grounds keeping, librarian, painter, tour guide, etc. If you understand the US credit system, you will understand this is a heavy load.

Why did I do it? This is because I learnt as a young child from my parents that hard work is an opportunity, to give my best in everything, and to take pride in the work I do.. Fortunately, they are the minority.) Every single person, anywhere, should have the opportunity to succeed if they want to put in the effort and be accountable for their own actions. In the end, they should be able to reap what they sow. It is bearable that opportunities are limited depending on how well-off financially one's family is but when higher education opportunities are race-based, like it is in Malaysia ; it is downright cruel for those who see education as the only way out of poverty. If you want to say discrimination is here in the US , yes, of course it is. Can you name a country where it doesn't happen? But let me tell you one thing - if you go looking for it, you will find it. But in Malaysia , you don't have to go look for it because it seeks you out, slaps you in your face every which way you turn, and is sanctioned by law! Here in the US , my children have the same opportunity to go to school and learn just like their black, white, and immigrant friends. At school, they eat the same food, play the same games, are taught the same classes and when they are 18, they will still have the same opportunities. Why would I want to bring my children back to Malaysia ? So they can suffer the state-sanctioned discrimination as the non-malays have for over 30 years? As for being a slave in the foreign country, I am a happy 'slave' earning a good income as an IT project manager. I work five days a week; can talk bad about the president when I want to; argue about politics, race and religion openly; gather with more than 50 friends and family when I want (no permit needed) and I don't worry about the police pulling me over because they say I ran the light when I didn't.

We malaysians truely understand that we hate africans especially Nigerians, but the fact that we hate them does not mean that thier private lives should be monitored by the citizens of this country. i have been to nigeria, south africa, Ghana, zimbabwe and many african countries and i reallized that what we malaysians think about the africans especially nigerians are always wrong. Nigerians are the most happiest and welcoming people in the whole world. they are better than some of our chinese and indian citizens and more open than us. am a malaysian chinese from kuatan pahang and i have many of my malaysian friends who are drug dealers and fraudsters too. and the percentage of crime here in malaysia are practiced by the chinese and indians and not the africans. The fact that the africans have enough money to drink beer, drive good cars and take care of our females than us does not mean that they are doing illegal business, else, Have you been doing business with them? and how did you know what business they are doing? It is good we all go straight to the point by saying that we dont know how they get their money than accusing the innocent africans simply because we are jealous of their living well here in our country. Most africans studying here are matured and married, but there is no late age for education. some of them accused have a good and rich business in their country, making millions and billions of african currency which can be approximately up to 200,000 t0 300,000(dollars) in 2months to 1year. these people have enough to squander and they are happy. In Africa, millions of unemployed black men armed with knives and machetes ready to rob and kill, are roaming the streets everyday. Africa is a continent that worst than hell and being labeled as a failed continent by the international community. They are many villages, towns and cities where large numbers of black Africans are not clothed, sheltered and without food, something unimaginable to our society. They are very lazy and depend on welfare. Large numbers of African American women are single parents. Billions of dollars spent every year on them for welfare and social services. This is the US taxpayers worst nightmare.

I am a Malaysian Chinese living in Subang Jaya. I have come to know of a few Nigerians and other Africans who are well-behaving students in this area. We malaysians always pride ourselves for being friendly people, why shud we treat Africans as an exception? The only way to overcome the prejudices passed down to us by our parents is to talk to them , and try to understand them. When you pass by an African student next time, extend a hello to them or a smile,or just a gentle nod of the head. these simple actions breed goodwill. many africans here are God fearing people, as can be attested to, by the sprouting up of many Nigerian churches in Subang,PJ, and Puchong. I encourage the African pastors and church members to find ways to engage more with the local community, and even to turn up to local events hosted by local communities.

To the Africans, pls understand that you are guests in our country. Many Malaysians will stand up to defend you if your rights are infringed upon, so long as you are a law abiding person. We are not racist even though some of our actions or responses seem like racism to you. For a long time, there were no Africans in this country, until the last few years where many has arrived to study, and also to engage in 'other' activities.Also the few among you who are involved in crimes are sullying the reputation of Africans as a whole.And the numbers of criminals are increasing, many are never reported because they are never arrested!The media highlight the crimes not to racial profile the Africans, but to warn us gullible and ignorant Malaysians who are so easily conned and cheated. Without the media doing the job,more malaysians will be conned.

To the college heads, i do not think you guys have done enough to help African stidents integrate into local society. Students are also human beings, they are not here just to study, but also to sample the fun of living in another cultural environment. Also, pls address the accomodation issues of African students. I have been trying to get an apartment for a few Nigerian students but finding it hard as homeowners do not want to rent to them, many fearing complaints from their neighbours.

To the politicians from both sides of the divide, pls treat all crimes seriously. I agree with James, it is bad that our police so corrupted and release apprehended criminals after taking bribes. Don't they know this is sending the wrong signal to the world that our police are criminal-friendly and this would only result in even more criminals entering our country. Police have said the principal could be charged for "provocation," a crime punishable by to up to two years in jail.

School officials declined to comment, and Siti Inshah could not be contacted and has not spoken to the media.

Malaysian media have reported that the complaints against Siti Inshah claimed she said "Chinese students are not needed here and can return to China."

She was also accused of saying that "for the Indian students, the prayer string tied around their neck and wrist makes them look like dogs because only dogs are tied like that."

Lim Kit Siang, a lawmaker from the opposition Democratic Action Party, said Siti Inshah's alleged comments have undermined Prime Minister Najib Razak's campaign to promote multiracial harmony.

Malay Muslims make up nearly two-thirds of Malaysia's 28 million people, while ethnic Chinese and Indian who mainly practice Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism comprise most of the remaining population.
